Modulinformationen "Introduction to Human Rights"
This module introduces the international human rights framework and its evolution in global and regional contexts. It explores the main concepts, theories, and institutions that shape the human rights system, with a particular focus on the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the European Union. Combining legal and critical perspectives, the course examines key instruments, mechanisms, and contemporary challenges through case studies such as freedom of expression.

- Genesis and Development of the Human Rights System
- Universal and Regional Human Rights Systems
- Key stakeholders and governance structures
- Contemporary Challenges and Opportunities for Human Rights
Course structure
- Duration: six weeks plus one exam week (seven weeks in total)
- Structure: six learning phases and one exam phase
- Live sessions: approximately two to three webinars (each approx. 90 minutes). These are the only fixed dates and will be announced before the course starts. Since the course is revised prior to each run, the exact dates cannot be communicated earlier. One hybrid session also takes place during the Campus Week in September, with the option to attend either on campus or online. All live sessions will be recorded and made available on Moodle.
- Assessment: participants work through the course materials and tasks in each phase at their own pace. The course is assessed through a portfolio exam that compiles all phase tasks and is submitted at the end of the course.
Learning Materials: e-lectures, academic readings, lecture presentations, curated podcasts, and selected video content accompany each phase to support both independent and guided learning.
