Benign by Design
1.320,00 €
In this course, you will explore the concept of Benign by Design (BbD) as a forward-looking approach to designing chemical substances, materials and processes with reduced environmental and toxicological impact while maintaining or improving functionality. Building on concepts introduced in Environmental Chemistry, Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, and in silico Modelling, the module integrates experimental and computational perspectives to support safer and more sustainable chemical innovation.
Using state-of-the-art examples from scientific literature and practical exercises, you will learn how molecular de novo design and re-design can be applied in practice, while also critically reflecting on current limitations related to data availability and methodological gaps. The module further extends the Benign by Design concept to materials, processes and substance flows, linking it to sustainable chemistry and circular economy approaches.
Course structure
- Duration: six weeks
- Structure: The course is divided into three learning phases.
- Live sessions: : The course includes one live webinar per phase (each approximately 90 minutes), held in the afternoon (usually at 5:00 pm CEST). The exact dates will be announced before the course begins. All live sessions will be recorded and made available on Moodle for students who are unable to attend.
- Assessment: Participants work through the course materials and complete assigned tasks at their own pace. Assessment is based on the successful completion of these tasks.
Who
should attend
This course is suitable for professionals working in chemistry, toxicology,
environmental sciences, materials science, sustainability or regulatory affairs
who are interested in designing safer and more sustainable chemicals, materials
and processes. It is particularly relevant for those involved in chemical
innovation, product development, risk assessment or sustainability-driven
research and decision-making.
